The Basics of Trading
These 2 programs are the most useful, in my opinion, to video trading. We both know that the purpose of trading shows is to watch what we receive and these 2 programs will allow you to do so.
Before downloading your first show, you should have these 2 programs downloaded first:
Before downloading your first show, you should have these 2 programs downloaded first:
The VLC player is similar to other video players but it can play almost any video file.
This program is Cost & Virus Free. VLC To Download VLC: 1. click the large VLC above. 2. click 'download' [The download should start, save it to your DESKTOP if it asks you to save it somewhere.] A VLC File Will Look Like This: | This program is not always needed, but sometime you can't watch a video without it. First step is you need to download WinRAR.
It is 100% cost and virus free: WINRAR To download WINRAR: 1. click the large WINRAR above. 2. click 'download now' [the download should start automatically, and should go to desktop] (WARNING: When I downloaded this on my new computer, it came with all sorts of "other programs" that were random. I was able to uninstall them from my computer though without damaging winrar) A file needing the use of WINRAR will look like this: |
It is now time to download your first file!
A download is usually done over Megaupload. Each link is a part of the show. You can only download one link a time. Each download takes a different amount of time, depending on the file size.
If you are downloading an Audio:
Audios usually take 5 minutes or less, depending on how fast your computer is. Audios usually have one link, sometimes two. When the file is finished downloading, it is usually in RAR format. In this case, you need WINRAR to extract the audio files from it. To extract the audio files, please follow these steps:
1. Right click on the single RAR file.
2.Click 'extract files...'
3. Pick a spot you will FIND IT AGAIN. [Desktop is usually a good place to save it.]
4. When its done extracting, there should be a folder now on your desktop labeled as the show you just downloaded.
When you open the folder, the audio is usually split up into many parts, and you can listen to them using iTunes, VLC or other media players.
At this point, you can delete the original RAR file [the one that looks like the picture on the right.] You don't need to, but I always do just because I have very low disk space left on the computer, and I need the space. After deleting it, empty your recycle bin on your computer will completely get rid of the original RAR file off your computer. The deleting of the these files should not affect the audios you just extracted from it.
If you are downloading a Video:
Video files take much longer to download that audios, usually 45 minutes or so per link. You can tell when you are downloading a video because usually it has more links. Videos can have from 1 link to almost 20.
Video files come both as RAR files, or VOB files.
VOB FORMAT
• If the file is in VOB format, it will look like the picture on the left [Cone]. When in this format, all you need to do is double click it and you are able to watch on the VLC player you've downloaded. Hooray!
RAR FORMAT
• If it is in RAR format [the icon with what looks like a stack of books], you need to follow the following steps to extract the VOB files:
1. Right click on the First RAR file in the series.
2. Click 'extract files...'
3. Pick a spot you will FIND IT AGAIN. [Desktop is usually a good place to save it.]
4. When done extracting, there are usually 5 VOB files [Cone Icons] and sometimes small files on your desktop. [or where ever you have decided to save the files.]
You can now play these files on the VLC player.
At this point, you can delete the the original RAR files, [the icons that look like a stack of books.] Deleting ONLY these files should not affect the files you just extracted from it.
Small Files
• Sometimes you download these files separately, and they are a very quick download. You do not have to download the small files unless you are planning to burn the VOB to DVD. Small files come in RAR format.

Please don't hold me responsible for anything that might go wrong when downloading these programs. I did not create these programs, they are the programs I use personally, and recommend to all new traders. If there is disagreement or problems, feel free to contact me.
Do's & Don'ts of Trading
Do's • Always Be Polite:
This may be a given, but it is very important. When you are starting out trading, you want to set a good name for yourself. If you're rude, you can be put on bad trader list which warn other traders not to trade with you. So remember to always say Thank you! •Mention You Are a New Trader: When doing your first couple of trades, be sure to mention you are a new trader and you don't have much to offer. Traders usually give you a few extra shows to add to collection. Be careful though, don't just send, "I'm new, can I have some shows?". •Look Through Their Website: If you go through a fellow trader's website, and see that they don't have a show that you have, be sure to mention you have that show! Since you have less shows, its easier for you to look for those certain shows in their collection. While your doing this, pick out a show or two that you want, but ask them for it after they reply, not right away. •Reply in a Timely Fashion: If you keep a fellow trader waiting for days for their show, they won't be happy. Be sure to send your links when they accept your offer and make sure you get your shows in return. •Be Organized: Make sure all your shows are in one spot. If they are all over the place, you won't be able to find them and then it becomes a mess. Every time I get new shows, I add them to this mass e-mail I send to myself. I also add them to another list I have in Microsoft Word. I have 2 just in case one gets erased. • Make a Website: This is not a necessity but I believe it is very helpful. I am somewhat shy and don't send many trade requests anymore, but I get at least 2 or more a week because I have a website. Although I do get traders who just send a long list, its much simpler to have a website to look through. | Don'ts • Abuse the "I'm a New Trader" excuse:
Once you have 15 or 20 shows, I would stop asking for completely free shows. This doesn't mean you should completely stop saying you are new, but you shouldn't be, "You have all the shows I have, can I have some shows?". Find someone you can trade with, that also doesn't have that many shows. Even getting just one show is a good trade. • False Advertise: Never pretend you have something you don't. You need to be honest to be considered a good trader. No one is going to judge you on the amount of shows you have. • Ignore People You Don't Want To Trade With: Really you should want to trade with anyone if your new, but never ignore a person who is sending you a trade request. If you really don't want to trade with them, tell them in a polite way. • Ignore Problems: If you are having trouble with a program or file, do not be afraid to confront the trader [on the internet of course]. Most traders will be happy to help you fix the problem. If the trader you have a problem with isn't friendly, ask another one you trust. Most are always available for help! • Give Out Personal Information: I don't say more than my first name, Olivia. Do not post pictures of yourself or any other personal information on your website or in a message. Of course I can't make you obey this 'rule', but I thought it would be a good thing to add. Be safe!(: • Post These Shows on Youtube: At first, that was the whole reason I started trading. When I was told that the more people post of shows on the internet, the more they tighten security in the theaters, I immediately pushed the idea out of my head. If they tighten security in theaters it means we will have less shows for trade. If you really enjoy and respect this hobby, then please don't post shows on Youtube or any other video sharing site! |
Questions I Asked Before I Started Trading.
EDENISMYELPHIE,who I'm sad to say is currently not trading, is the trader who I decided to ask for help to start trading. I had been interested in trading shows, but I knew absolutely nothing about it. Here are the very first questions I asked when I started trading and Edenismyelphie's answers to those questions.
I have put a * on what I believe to be the most resourceful questions.
They are all very helpful, if they weren't I wouldn't have posted them, but the starred ones are very knowledgeable.
*Q1:Where do I get shows to trade with?
A1: Go to traders (such as myself) and notify them that you are a new trader and hopefully they will gift you a show or two. If they don't, then ask politely ask for an audio or video just to get you started. That is the best way to hopefully get going and on your way.
*Q2: It it trading shows illegal in any way?
A2: No. Trading shows is not illegal as long as you didn't record the show and you're not selling shows for money. Some people do sell shows, but I feel it is very wrong to sell something that is most definitely is not rightly mine.
Q3:Do I have to be a certain age to trade?
A3:Not in my opinion. Just make sure trading is something that you have time in your life for and something you can handle. Trading really isn't that crazy when you get started and still doesn't get too hectic even for me, just know how to balance it off and learn most importantly how to communicate with other traders, (be polite). I'd say as long as you know what your doing you'll be fine.
*Q4:Can it give viruses to my computer?
A4:No. I certainly hope not lol! When you trade, all your trading is links. Just pieces of text! These links are where you download the show and later burn to DVD. I'm pretty sure its completely safe.
Q5:How did you go SO MANY shows?
A5:Haha, very good question. That was my only question when I started off! I was in your exact same position. I saw these HUGE lists with so many things I wanted and just wanted it all lol! So, I did what your doing now. I searched for traders who could tell me what trading is and help me start. I did this by typing into Youtube "Full shows for Trade". I looked at all the results and went to the channels of people who's videos came up and from there websites. Find people who don't have that much and make trades there, and keep doing that. I would start off by trying to collect Wicked. Even if you don't like Wicked, it is the "thing" and is VERY "popular" (no pun intended lol). Secondly, don't just collect Wicked. Having a variety is very good and will make you go very far! Just remember to be patient and although everything may seem over your head right now, it will get better in time! Trust me, I've been there before!
Q6: How do I get the videos your going to send me? Is it through e-mail or a specific website?
A6: I usually send [the links] through either e-mail or via Youtube. Those are pretty much the only places I trade.
*Q7:I saw on your page, I think VOB Format? What does that mean, and what are other formats and what are the differences between them?
A7: Ok, so VOB format is referring to VOBs. VOBs is a format of the show taken directly from the video camera. It is in the video's original state and is as clear is it can possibly get. Also, when you trade with VOBs the whole DVD structure is included, which means basically you can burn it to DVD in 2 clicks and don't have to make any conversions. Online videos on the other hand, are formats such as .avi .wmv .mpg ect. These are the exact opposite of VOBs. Basically they are VOBs but converted into these formats. By doing this the quality is made pixilated and not nearly as good as the original. Also, online videos take more steps to burn to DVD.

Q8: When you said make sure you have time for it, how long does it take? [downloading, trading, making a website, ect.]
A8:The begining takes a little time making a website and all, but it really isn't that time consuming because you really don't have that much to trade with. As you collect more and more you'll get more trade requests and have to update your site more often. But, still is really doesn't take that much time out of your personal life, but just depends on what kind of person you are :)
*Q9: Once I start trading, and I trade someone a video, do i still have the video or did I comepletly move the file off my computer and onto theirs? Or is it like sharing pictures with someone, keeping a copy but making sure they have it too?
A9:Okay so when you trade, all you're trading are links to where you can download the whole show. You aren't physically e-mailing the video to someone. Your just trading links, peices of text. That's one of the best things about trading is that you don't lose anything, you just keep adding to your list. When someone askes for the links to a show, you just copy and paste the ones they want, but still keep them for yourself, they do the same when you get your half. Also some traders allow people to purchase shows and then will mail the DVD of the show to them viea snail mail, but most people don't do that.
Q10: How often do you get trade offers, and how often do you actually accept them?
A10: Gosh. Well, for me since I have a lot on my list now, I tend to recieve offers at least every week. I generally accept almost all of them even if they don't have anything I would like and I just gift them the show, depending on its rarity. I also get a good amount of new traders asking for help which is great!
Q11:Is there any websites that could be easy for me to make a website with?
A11: The best websites for making your own would probably be either www.webs.com or www.weebly.com. I personally recommend Weebly, because usually everyone starts their site on Webs, but then in the long run they start running into problems and switch to weebly. That's what happend to me!
